- GO-TO Carp Rig - Mike Holly style
Recommended for best performance - Bottom Bait, Wafter, Popup
The Go-To carp rig has been used to devastating effect by Mike Holly for a couple of years with many huge captures along the way. This rig is not only versatile but it also offers you excellent hooking properties. It also gives you an indication if you've been "done" by a carp due to the unique setup. If a carp has picked up your bait and hooked itself but managed to eject the hook you will be able to tell as the d section will now be tight around the hook eye.
The rig can be cast hard and far and the bait will always sit at the same position on the shank as the only way it can move is if the hook and lead are pulled away from each other (as per a run) You can have total confidence that the rig is always well presented for you.
With the added versatility of being able to use bottom baits, wafters and popups and the ability to change hooks without having to throw away the whole rig, the go-to carp rig is an all rounder. As the rig uses silicone instead of shrink tubing there is no need for a kettle when a new hook is added. Simply slide the silicone down, remove and replace the hook and then slide the silicone back up over the hook eye, job done.
Key Rig Features & Benefits
Made with a stiff coated Korda N Trap braid that allows the rig to perform to the maximum and create the all important rig mechanics.
If the hooklink does happen to get kinked after fighting a fish it can be straightened without steam in just a few seconds using 2 knot pullers.
Lead Setup - Suitable for both lead clip and helicopter setups (select the relevant swivel)
Longevity - The boom section can be used over and over.
Anti-Tangle - The boom will always kick the hook away from the lead whether cast or dropped from a boat.
Reset properties - In the event of an aborted take, the rig will reset itself, ready for the next bite.
Quick change - The hook section can be replaced due to the style of rig so no need to throw the rig once the hookpoint gets damaged.
Tips
When using a wafter you may need to trim some of it with scissors or balance with some putty or lead shot. Ideally you will want the hook to be laying flat on the lakebed with the hookbait hovering just above it. The buoyancy of a wafter will vary depending on brand and size so it's always worth testing your rig in the margin or a tub before casting out. Ideally you will want the rig to slowly fall through the water so it will sit on top of any detritus.
Subsequently, if you're using a popup you will more than likely require some putty to make sure the popup is anchored to the lakebed. As above, it's always good practice to check your rigs before they're cast out into the lake to ensure they sit correctly.
