- KD Rig - Korda N Trap
Recommended for best performance - Wafter, Balanced Bait, Boilie
The KD Rig is a very effective variation of a standard hair rig and continues to catch plenty of carp to this day. Although not a fashionable rig these days it's still highly effective and can be used all year round due to it's ability to use pretty much any hookbait you want.
The rig mechanics are very similar to a hair rig but whereas a knotless knot is normally 6 wraps up the hook shank with the hair coming off that, the KD will be trapped between the wraps which makes the hook sit at a very aggressive hooking angle. This will allow the hook to swing freely and take hold in the bottom lip or scissors when the carp tries to eject the bait.
A wide range or hookbaits can be used and allows the rig to be presented in a variety of ways as well which makes it very versatile. If you want to use a popup you can add some putty to anchor the hook to the lakebed and it will be a perfect popup rig for you.
If you prefer a wafter, simply trim the bait so that it wafts just above the hook which should be flat on the lakebed. If you prefer a single boilie or pellet etc then that is achievable too.
As most hookbaits can be used, it can give you more options when you're on the bank and allow your rig to be cast onto different spots whilst maintaining excellent presentation.
Whatever your preference you can have confidence that this rig will do what's needed when you get them all important bites.
Key Rig Features & Benefits
Korda N Trap is perfect for this rig, it's not only solid and abrasion resistant but blends in great with many lakebeds, making it very difficult to detect.
Lead Setup - Ideally used with a lead clip setup.
Terminated - The rig will have a loop with a figure of eight knot. Solid and strong.
Anti-Tangle - The coated hooklink will always kick the hook away from the lead whether cast or dropped from a boat.
Reset properties - In the event of an aborted take, the rig will reset itself, ready for the next bite.
Exceptional hooking properties - The aggressive angle the hook sits at allows it to take hold almost instantly.
Tips
When using a popup you will more than likely need to add some putty to anchor the rig to the lakebed. The buoyancy of a popup will vary depending on brand and size so it's always worth testing your rig in the margin or a tub before casting out. Ideally you will want the rig to slowly fall through the water so it will sit on top of any detritus. The same goes for wafters, ensure they sit correctly and trim the hookbait so that the hook sits flat and the bait hovers just above it. I always take a small tub and balance my hookbaits in that as it's quicker and easier than doing in the edge. Spending the extra few minutes will make all of the difference in catch rates.
To stop the hookbait moving up the hair (common with pellets) and spoiling the presentation, you can use a float stop and trap the bait between it and the boilie stop.
